Internationally-recognized New Orleans PR Firm Selects
Two Summer Scholars
Two positions awarded for first time in program’s five-year history
NEW ORLEANS, LA (June 3, 2008) - Noted public relations firm Deveney Communication has honored two college students by naming them participants in the distinguished Deveney Communication Summer Scholar Program, one of the most prestigious opportunities in the business for students and rising professionals.
The program, initiated in 2004, is a partnership between Deveney and the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Summer Scholars benefit from exposure and integration into public relations work and networking with PR practitioners, plus the opportunity to live and work in New Orleans.
“For five years, this program has allowed us to select from the country’s best and brightest upcoming public relations professionals and introduce them into the professional world,” said John Deveney ABC, APR, President and CEO of Deveney Communication. “We provide these students with real-world experience, and they bring new ideas and skills to our firm.”
Deveney Communication received more applications than ever this year and decided to break tradition by choosing two Summer Scholars for the first time.
“Both Scholars are highly qualified, as is evident through the rigorous application and interview process they completed,” Deveney said.
The 2008 Deveney Communication Summer Scholars are:
Brandon Morris of Pine Bluff, Ark. Brandon is a recent graduate of Arkansas State University-Jonesboro. He received a Bachelor of Science in journalism with an emphasis in public relations. Morris served as the president of his school’s PRSSA chapter and as a staff reporter for The Herald college newspaper prior to his graduation this past May.

“I am gaining real-world experience and putting my education into practice,” said Morris, who will receive paid housing in New Orleans in addition to the Summer Scholar stipend. “This is one of the most exciting opportunities available to a recent graduate in my field.”
Parker Wishik of Ocean Springs, Miss., is a rising senior at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge earning his Bachelor of Arts in mass communication with a public relations concentration. He serves as a communications assistant for the LSU Honors College, an Ambassador and Student Senator for the Manship School of Mass Communication and secretary of the PRSSA chapter at LSU. He previously wrote for LSU’s campus newspaper, The Daily Reveille, and served as Director of Communications for LSU Student Government.
“I’m incredibly thankful that Deveney offered me a second Summer Scholar position,” Wishik said. “I really wanted this position after coming to love New Orleans and hearing great things about this firm, and now I’m fortunate to be working here.”
The Summer Scholars were excited to go straight to work and were assigned to several of Deveney Communication’s high-profile clients. Morris, whose interests include politics and law, was assigned to work with law firms Palmer, Reifler and Associates, PalmerWeb.com and Fisher & Phillips, as well as healthcare entities Touro Infirmary, People’s Health and Arxcel.
Wishik was assigned Ruth’s Chris Steak House, New Orleans Museum of Art, Starbucks Coffee Company and Louisiana Office of Tourism. Both Scholars also engage in a variety of projects for the firm itself and its other clients.
