NEW ORLEANS— The Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) recognized Deveney Communication for communication excellence this month in Santiago, Chile. SATW awarded Deveney Communication the International Gold Cushman Award for its “150th Anniversary of Mardi Gras, Six Months After Hurricane Katrina” campaign. The firm also received a Silver Cushman Award for its Post-Katrina Crisis Communications on behalf of the New Orleans Metropolitan and Visitors Bureau (NOMCVB).
The 150-year anniversary of Mardi Gras in 2006 served as the official invitation that New Orleans was ready to host visitors again. Deveney Communication was given the task of reaching out to media visiting the city, ensuring that messages being sent to the rest of the country were positive and accurate. The team organized a Mardi Gras Media Tour that included top lifestyle, travel and tourism writers that resulted in optimistic media coverage, including 22.5 million impressions and S8 million in earned media coverage. The positive reporting of the event also resulted in a $25,000 donation to the Tourism Rebirth Fund from Bacardi’s “World’s Longest Strand of Mardi Gras Beads” project.
Deveney’s opportunity to successfully promote the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Mardi Gras can be attributed to the relationship Deveney and the NOMCVB developed while working together to establish the New Orleans Tourism Communications and Media Center. Deveney initiated its strategic crisis plan and re-entered the city only 20 days after Hurricane Katrina to implement crisis communications for the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau (NOMCVB). The team established the New Orleans Tourism Communications and Media Center, which they manned seven days a week to help provide accurate messages to and manage over 2,000 journalists reporting from the New Orleans area. Deveney Communication donated some $100,000 in pro-bono work for the NOMCVB response center. The efforts resulted in over $406 million in publicity for New Orleans tourism between August and December of 2005.
Deveney Communication’s work with the NOMCVB during the critical months following Katrina has been an important aspect to the city’s recovery process. The agency’s hard work has resulted positively to send the nation the crucial message that New Orleans is open and ready to welcome visitors.
